
In the LED lighting industry, CLO stands for Constant Light Output. It is a highly practical and energy-efficient core feature integrated into modern intelligent LED drivers.
Simply put, the CLO function acts as a "temporal compensator" for LED fixtures, specifically designed to counteract the lumen depreciation (light decay) that naturally occurs over time.
1. Why is CLO Needed? (Background)
All LED light sources share a common physical characteristic: their luminous efficacy gradually decreases over time, a phenomenon known as lumen depreciation or light decay.
The Drawback of Traditional Design (Over-design): To ensure a fixture still meets the required design illumination at the end of its lifespan (e.g., after 50,000 hours of operation), engineers traditionally over-design the initial output. For instance, if a space only requires 1,000 lumens, the fixture might be configured to output 1,200 lumens initially.
The Resulting Issues:
1 Energy Waste: During the first few years of operation, users pay for excess electricity to generate higher-than-necessary brightness.
2 Accelerated Aging: The higher initial operating current generates more heat, which conversely accelerates the degradation of the LED chips.
2. How CLO Works
The CLO function addresses these challenges flawlessly by dynamically adjusting the driving current.
Integrated Odometer/Timer: The LED driver features a built-in timer that tracks and accumulates the fixture's actual operating hours.
Preset Lumen Maintenance Curve: Manufacturers program a pre-defined compensation curve into the driver’s Microcontroller Unit (MCU), based on the specific lumen maintenance characteristics of the LED chips (e.g., the L_{80}B_{10} metrics).
Dynamic Current Compensation:
Initial Stage (New Fixture): The driver operates at a lower output current, delivering exactly the designed brightness. Since it does not run at full load, it saves significant energy.
In-Service Stage: As the cumulative operating time increases, the driver automatically and gradually ramps up the output current according to the preset curve.
Late Stage: The increased current precisely offsets the LED's lumen depreciation, ensuring the total luminous flux (brightness) remains completely constant throughout the fixture's entire lifespan.
3. Typical Application Scenarios
The CLO function is ideal for environments with long maintenance cycles, strict illuminance requirements, or large-scale lighting installations:
Roadway and Tunnel Lighting: Streetlights consume high power and are deployed in massive quantities. CLO delivers phenomenal energy savings here while guaranteeing long-term roadway safety illuminance.
Industrial Facilities and Warehouses: Due to high installation heights, replacing these fixtures is labor-intensive. CLO effectively extends maintenance intervals and reduces frequency.
Office and Commercial Lighting: It maintains a stable and comfortable luminous environment, thereby enhancing workplace productivity.

Horticultural applications of LED lighting are the current trend in the lighting industry. Leading companies around the world have been developing different products to meet the increasing demands.
As worldwide need for healthy, fresh food continues to grow, greenhouse growers require efficient, effective lighting to enable year-round growing. Current, powered by GE announced the release of the Arize Element Top Light, the industry’s first one-for-one LED replacement for 1000W High Pressure Sodium (HPS) products.
The Arize Element features multiple light spectrums to maximize growth for specific crops, allowing growers to tailor the light to the specific needs of each crop. Universal installation options allow the light to be installed in dozens of different ways on existing structures, dramatically reducing installation time. The light also features a unique design that minimizes shadowing, allowing for maximum natural light penetration.
Osram Opto Semiconductors presents P2W 01, a particularly reliable addition to its familiar Osram Ostar Projection series. This new LED contains four chips which can be controlled in two separate groups. The LED therefore represents an integrated solution which in the event of emergencies offers trouble-free operation in safety-related and security-related applications such as control room monitors.
“The redundant system of the new Osram Ostar Projection is ideal for 24/7 applications. If a chip should ever unexpectedly fail, the second system will continue to operate without any problem at all”, said Wolfgang Schnabel, Product Marketing LED at Osram Opto Semiconductors. Up to now, only the chips in the large Osram Ostar Projection P3W could be controlled separately. This is now also possible with the P2W 01. Osram Opto Semiconductors has developed a compact LED with two self-contained parallel systems with two chips each. The connection design has also been improved, from 2-pad to 3‑pad. This means there are now three connections instead of two. All four chips occupy one pad, the other two pads are each reserved for a group of two. “A new soldering process ensures that the heat produced in the application remains low. The connection between the chip and the package can therefore withstand a lot”, added Schnabel.
